Bart

Am I the only one who prefers Bart to Bret (or Beau or Brent)?

reply

I'm crazy about Bart. Always dug Jack Kelly. Now, this doesn't mean I don't have a fondness for Bret but I'm never disappointed if it turns out to be a Bart episode.

I thought everyone liked Brother Bart the best!

I like Bret a WHOLE lot, but after watching both for a while, I started liking Bart even better!

I guess Bart just seems a little smoother to me.

Agreed.

Bart has always been my favorite. He has a bit more of a sharper cut to his wit. I like that.

You can't go wrong with "The People's Friend," "Hadley's Hunters," or "Arizona Black Maria." All are Jack Kelly episodes and all are as good as anything James Garner ever did on the series.

reply

I think that Garner is more for the female fans, and Kelly is more for the guy's. All the women in my family love Garner and most of the guy's prefer Kelly. Anybody else notice the same thing?

reply

I actually find it to be the opposite. My dad loves James Garner and could care less about Jack Kelly while my sister always preferred Bart over Bret. As for myself, I like them both prettty equal. The best episode of the series tend to be the ones where Bret and Bart team up.

reply

I'll agree that the best episodes star both. Still, I'm used to seeing Bart more favored by the guy's and Bret for the ladies so I'm just going to have to see you as an exception, lol.

reply

I too like the episodes when both of them team up the best. I like them both, but like Bret more. FYI- Maverick has been on American Life tv for at least a year as far as I know. It's on Thursday nights at 9:00 eastern, and again at midnight.

I was very happy to read this thread. When I watched the original Maverick on TV, it seemed to me that almost everyone I knew preferred Bret to Bart. Male or female didn't matter.

But I always preferred Bart. James Garner, as good a guy as he is in real life, does have a hard edge about him that has allowed him to play drama, and even a semi-bad guy or two, as well as comedy.

On the other hand, Jack Kelly was pure soft spoken suaveness and a perfect soft con man.

My biggest regret - For several years before his death, Jack Kelly was the Mayor of Huntington Beach, CA, which is in the county where I live. I can't believe I never attended a city council meeting during those days.

I love the very affable Jack Kelly, but he is overmatched when compared to the charismatic James Garner. Garner took that raffish Maverick character onto the big screen in classic films like THE GREAT ESCAPE and THE WHEELER DEALERS. He was also an accomplished dramatic actor (HOUR OF THE GUN, MURPHY'S ROMANCE). Jack Kelly's post-MAVERICK career is rather meager, the emcee of the game show SALE OF THE CENTURY. Jack Kelly was a fine Bart Maverick, but he lacked the looks and talent of brother Bret.

Jack Kelly had many screen credits after Maverick but unfortunately almost all were small parts. But at least he's remembered for Maverick which is more than most actors can say.

Are you nuts? Trust me, as a woman, I can assure you that Jack Kelly was fine.

reply

I have always believed that women are much better arbiters of men's looks just as men are better suited to judge the looks of a woman.

That said, as I man, I always preferred Jack Kelly, both lookswise and his delivery, to Jim Garner. And I'm a big fan of Garner's; I just liked Jack Kelly even better.

Unfortunately, he apparently lost his looks as he grew older and gained a whole lot of weight.

reply

You're not. I got interested in Maverick because of James Garner (who I knew from other series), but I like brother Bart (Jack Kelly) far more.
