Maverick is written with very modern sensibilities. For all the points listed by others in this thread. Good humor, diverse stories, great writing, great banter. This is by no means a typical western dealing with bad guys in typical tough jaw fashion. The strength of the Rifleman, which is otherwise a typical formula show, comes from the moral rearing of a child in difficult circumstances. That's its hook. I don't really watch to see how the conflicts are resolved. Maverick on the other hand is a complicated and fun show with lots of hooks where the story of the episodes is the bread and butter, not the growth of the characters.
