Fay and her opinion of her looks

I wonder why Fay (Coleen Gray) says that she's not pretty. Granted, she's no knockout like Sherry (Marie Windsor), but any man I know would be proud to have someone like her in his life. Johnny (Sterling Hayden) seems to treat her with a lot of respect and thinks she's pretty. I think Fay's scenes would have had more resonance if they had actually hired an unattractive actress in the role. Anyone agree or disagree?

Coleen Gray was (is) absolutely gorgeous and just made to look dowdy in The Killing. Nevertheless, I always laugh out loud when she says that line ("I`m not pretty.") in this film. Any doubt about Coleen Gray`s looks, I suggest seeing her in other films: Father is a Bachelor, Riding High, Copper Sky, Star in the Dust, etc. A knockout!

Marie Windsor is extremely attractive despite (or maybe because of) her Saturnine features. She has a fabulous figure and I always enjoy seeing her in other films. Try Swamp Women where she wears very short cut-off Levi`s.

My opinion is that both lead actresses in The Killing are easy to look at. Excellent actresses too.

Don't all women think that?

In American movies, plain women are always portrayed by beautiful women, and we're expected to suspend our disbelief. Truly plain women are to found in character roles, or occasionally as leads in British movies.
