You sure the director of A Clockwork Orange and The Shining made this??

I thought Kubrick was different - who changed the style of films for the better. But he obviously didn't start out that way. The Killing was exactly like all the other cheesy, poorly acted, extremely-old-fashioned movies of the 50s. I really just can't get into many of them. Movies started getting good from the 60s, with very few exceptions from the 50s (namely 12 Angry Men).

This film was definitely ahead of its time with its non-linear structure, the inventive use of unusual camera angles, the very effective deployment of lighting and darkness, and the subtle sexual and racial aspects.

While the basic plot was fairly conventional it was ingeniously detailed, with a wealth of interesting characters down to the smaller roles. Hardly what I'd call a routine crime drama.

I'm pretty sure, he is listed as the director isn't he?

Were we watching the same movie? because I seem to remember something about an out of place story. If that isn't different according to you, what is?

I suggest you watch some more 50s movies if you think they all are cheesy and poorly acted. The "extreamly-old fashioned" thing is because, well... they are old.

Sounds like a personal problem.

In my opinion, quantity of good movies started to decline in the 60s. And there are a ton of exceptions.

Ok. Very narrow-minded. In the 50s movies were still just an extension of stage productions. In the 60s they started to become a medium of its own. Kubrick was on the cutting edge of that happening. The Killing is still one of his earlier films, but you can see his style already coming through. Plus the cinematography is gorgeous like all Kubrick films.
