Would this film be considered so great if another director made it?

If it wasn't the famous Kubrick who made the movie in his early days, do you think it would get this amount of praise?

For example, "The Asphalt Jungle" is an incredible, great film (probably better than this and much more seminal) and it isn't even in the top 250 on imdb. It only has around a measly 7000 votes, while this has over 20,000 votes.

Weird, huh?

Just saw it for the first time. Haven't seen The Asphalt Jungle. I will say that I think The Killing is very well done, and I was enjoying quite a bit. Didn't even make the connection to Kubrick until Sterling Hayden started to try to check his luggage, at which point I remembered seeing the end of the film on a Kubrick special.
I hope I can see The Asphalt Jungle at some point.
FWIW, I think the film clearly isn't at the level of a lot of Kubrick's later work. But OTOH, I tend to think of Kubrick as the best director of the 20th century. I felt the film was at a level of quality between the two Ocean's Eleven films.

I would hope so, of course I think I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't Kubrick, but the camerawork and angles, make this movie for me, I love Kubrick's methods, and of course if it was made by someone else it would be different ;)

I'm a huge Kubrick fan and while watching it I forgot it was even a Kubrick film. It's probably more well known because it is a Kubrick film, but that doesn't mean it isn't great.

I think it'd still be considered an incredible film for its time. But for sure wouldn't be in the TOP 250 like it is today.

The directing is indeed great, but the plot/writing is pretty mediocre.

It'd still be remembered as a decent film noir movie but without Kubrick it wouldn't be the same. I mean just look at the character of Maurice, he wouldn't get the depth if it was done by another director.

I first saw this film in the late 1950s when few had even heard of Stanley Kubrick. It was very popular at the box office because it was a good movie and regarded as being similar to Rififi which has become an all time classic.
