'56 vs '78

I watched both the 1956 and 1978 versions recently and while both were good, am I the only one who prefers the original over the remake. The remake did have good special effects, but I just liked the small town atmosphere of the original plus it seemed kind of like a Hitchcock film. I also generally just liked how it wrapped up the story in less time

I like the original but it wasn't scary that much while the 1978 version is one of the scariest movies ever!!!

everyone prefers the older one, the 78 version is just boobs and gore with no plot.

Ah, so you haven't seen it. Ok.

I watched this last night for the firs time. I guess since I had seen the 78 version first, it's the one I prefer. The older version seemed very slow. The one scene I thought was very good and creepy in the older version was when Bunnell and Becky looked out his office window to see the bustling community at 7:45 a.m. on a Saturday - then all the townsfolk gathered together to receive the pods. That was effective. I still can't understand what the purpose of the new people was. If they were duplicated perfectly, only without emotions, what was the purpose of it? The whole concept just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I prefer the original. Great cast, script. The remake is okay but can't compare to the 1956 version.

They weren't "new ppl" they were aliens that invaded the "new ppl" the memories of the original person were just retained.

Both are uniformly excellent and frightening...never saw the other two remakes. I think I prefer the 1956's original ending over the studio-imposed one. Either way, both are equally great - 78 version might have the bleaker ending.

I think this is the only time I liked the original and remake equally. As OP said, the original almost seemed like a Hitchcock movie, and I always enjoy B/W films.

Love both, but prefer the 78 version.

I love both films and find each scary. However I find the 1978 version much scarier mostly because once someone becomes a pod person in that they become devoid of emotion and act totally alien.

In the 1956 version they act strange but are still very human like. I also find the alien scream in the 1978 film to be chilling, it's like the pods are telepathically linked and when they find someone who isn't a pod they scream alerting other pods.

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .
