Am I the only person who thinks Jean Simmons voice is flat?
Well? I actually like Marlon Brando's voice. However I can not stand hers.

"What I got don't need pearls." -- Linda Darnell (1923-65)
I personally don't mind that Simmons and Brando are not great (or necessarily even competent) vocalists in this film. What's important is their talents as actors, both in comedy and drama. Their performances and their chemistry ("Yeah, chemistry!") under Mankiewicz' direction -- especially throughout the Havana segment -- elevate the romance in GUYS AND DOLLS to a level of which the makers of most musicals can only dream limply.
And for viewers who don't fully appreciate the sublime sense of release in Simmons' wonderful delivery of "If I Were a Bell," I'm glad I'm not you.
In an era that included Jane Powell, Kathryn Grayson, Doretta Morrow, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Janis Page and Mitzi Gaynor, Sam Goldwyn had to choose Jean Simmons to co-star in a musical?
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
I am watching this for the first time now and the scene of her in the purple suit and marlon in the banana tie just passed.
I came here to discuss how I wanted to shoot myself and cut off my ears after her singing.
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
