Am I the only person who thinks Jean Simmons voice is flat?

Well? I actually like Marlon Brando's voice. However I can not stand hers.

reply

Her voice warbles a bit.

reply

Did Jean Simmons and Marlon Brando in fact do their own singing?

reply

Yes, they did.

reply

yeah. i was really not impressed with her.

reply

Yeah she wasn't much of a singer, and not the greatest choice for the part IMO.

reply

If she had been too great, she would have overpowered Brando's voice (which is good, but not great), and then the musical wouldn't have worked. She was supposed to sing a little bit flat in "If I Were A Bell" because she's drunk (kind of like Ado Annie in Oklahoma). But yes, her voice was not that incredible by any means.

Quite honestly, I thought that both Brando and Simmons had suprisingly strong singing voices. I was actually more impressed with their numbers than I was with any of Sinatra's; I'm a fan of Sinatra, but in this film he quite honestly seemed rather limp, which may have been due to the fact that he apparently wanted to play Sky Masterson as was downright pissed that non-singer Brando got cast.

Sinatra is overrated. Bing Crosby was the greatest.

reply

Apples and Oranges.

Crosby was actually a "multimedia" powerhouse, with much more power and pull than Sinatra.

Sinatra was a P.R. powerhouse, with a romantic/playboy reputation that sold a lot of albums in a particular genre. A genre that Crosby could NOT touch.

But Crosby was "bigger" as far as economic impact and industry influence.

Each had their own role in their own worlds, they rarely crossed over or met up.

in High Society they sing and act together

reply

Well of course many stars were tried out in various combinations.

It doesn't mean it was a good idea.

reply

I've always been of the opinion that Sinatra's was consistently flat and Brando's consistently sharp. I don't know about you guys...but there you have it...
I bet there was no telling Sinatra that, though.

reply

I think they both did quite well.

We have to consider that they did not regularly sing, for a living.

No, no, no. I am not going to excuse a studio's desire for box office appeal to ruin a movie using people who have no ability to excel in the role.

I think the Three Stooges could have brought some box office to "From Here to Eternity", but somehow it wouldn't be quite the same movie.

reply

Well, I liked her singing.

And so did I!

I thought Brando's voice was rather weak. As good as this movie is, it should have been Sinatra as Sky Masterson and Dean Martin as Nathan Detroit, although Frankw as great as Nathan, too, despite his disappointment.

reply

People tend to say that the casting of Brando and Simmons proves that you don't have to be great singers to make a musical fantastic!
But I know what you mean, when she sings If I were a Bell, some of the notes are a bit bum and flat... but the voice doesn't really irritate me much!!

Yeah, Jean Simmons wasn't the best part of KISS. But, the the rest of the band is pretty bad ass. (I'm kidding, of course.)

I didn't care for her voice, but I didn't mind either.
It had a strange quality to it.

The one thing I noticed was the Dance routine in which another dancer took over.
I think it was during the cat song?

reply

I thought her voice was okay considering she was not a major musical theatre performer. However, I do agree that her voice was poor in comparison to other performers, like Isabel Bigley, the original Sarah. Even a girl at my school, who will play Sarah in an upcoming production of the show, has a better voice than Miss Simmons did.

I did find a certain charm in her poor vocals, though. They somehow brought out the character's innocent side. On the reverse, however, a strong soprano makes the character seem more grounded and assured. Ah, well.
