Scandalous

I think that in today’s society, a story about a middle-aged man who marries a 17-year-old would be picketed and protested. Now, imagine that in mid 1950’s such an older man with a younger woman would be unheard of. Yet, according to the commentator on TCM, the film did not receive any protests whatsoever. Interesting.

My older sister was 17 when she got pregnant and married in 1979. My brother-in-law was 20. She had to take a notarized note to Las Vegas. They have 3 kids and 4 grandkids and have been married for 36 years. It really wasn't seen as a big deal that she had married so young, but that might of been because she got pregnant (on prom night).

LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL! No you didn't just put your sisters business on IMDB! I am laughing, although her story is a wonderful one! For them to still be together with grandchildren after all those years together is a treasure. My mother was 17 and my father 25 when they married. They had 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Have an Aunt who married when she was 16.....her husband was 36...they had 5 children! My grandmother (her mother) 13 when she married.....my grandfather who was about 22 or 23. This all transpired in the south; where it was not uncommon for young teenage girls to marry men somewhat much older than themselves.

The only problem I had with the older man/17 year old match-up in this film....is that Dick Powell looked like her father! I am a hopeless romantic....so I enjoyed this immensely in spite of that little glitch for me.
