I Hate Remakes, But This Might Make a Really Cool Remake

Normallly I am against the whole idea of resurrecting a classic just to update it for the Internet generation, but I can see Black Lagoon done with real class and wit, in the hands of, I don't know -- Peter Jackson or somebody.

Thoughts?

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

I think, instead of re-using old ideas, they should try to understand what made those ideas so great. Then, they can try to come up with new ideas that will be just as memorable.
I don't think anybody in the film industry knows how to make monster movies anymore. That's why the classics, such as Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf-man, are done over and over again. They don't know how to make a good monster anymore, so they just re-use an existing monster that was created back when people knew what they were doing.
What needs to happen is that a film-maker needs to sit down and watch these classics, and ask themselves "why are these films so memorable?". If they can find the answer to that question, then they won't need to steal ideas from the past.

I recall that Peter Jackson was offered EITHER Creature from Black lagoon OR King Kong, and the rest is history.

I'ld love to see a video game remake. Not that it would matter for a video game but Alison Brie is a dead ringer for Julie Adams.

Well the "creature" was probably one of the best monsters of all time. Besides his obvious scary looks, it was the idea that he was smart and maybe clever that really gave you a chill. Any remake should explore this aspect of the creature. It could be a great remake!

It could be great, except of course the group would have to be racially diverse and the expedition leader would have to be female or at least more than a helpless screaming bimbo. And of course the Creature would be crappy CGI with the actors jumping around in front of a green screen. No thanks, don't mess with this classic.

reply

Yeah you're right Captain. Some things are best left unknown and some classics should not be messed with. Besides, Julie Adams could never, ever, be played by anyone else...don't mess with perfection.

While this is my favourite Classic Monster Movie, I wouldn't mind watching a modern remake - probably because I like to see more of the Gill-Man and I've never been fond of the sequels (especially the second). But this is not the right time: they should've done it back in the 80s, when they were remaking stuff like THE THING, THE FLY and THE BLOB. If I am not mistaken, both Joe Dante and John Carpenter tried at a certain point to do it back then. Nowadays it would just be another CG extravaganza filled with people cast out of GQ and cringe-inducing dialogues, while it should be something along the line of JAWS and the original ALIEN.

If they put in a few twists, a remake could be as scary and fun as "Alien."

Oh Goodness NO! ...Not only do I hate remakes... They are almost never ever done right... and with the dumb cgi cartoon special effects of today??? It would be a tragic mistake to touch this classic.. This is my fave monster movie!
