Incredibly slow and overrated!

I know it's an old movie, but it's incredibly slow paced! Some scenes take forever, it's just too slow for my taste.

And I've seen far better westerns, this ranks pretty low in my opinion. A 2 hour trudge of old music and slow scenes for a quick finale. We all knew the outcome anyway, so it was a bit of an anticlimax.

Overrated - Yes
Slow - don't think so
Too long - no

I was a little disappointed because I heard Shane was a great western and it was nominated for an Oscar (which sometimes seems to mean zero)

Don't get me wrong....it is a good movie but it falls well short of great. Worth watching but there are so many better westerns...

I like how you handled the replies here! 

Seems like any time someone tries to criticize a beloved classics, that OP will be called an idiot, his generation will be insulted, and often his grammar will be corrected.

I like the quote you posted. Yup, older generations have been complaining about younger generations since the beginning of time.

Thanks. Yes it's a shame that some people take other people's taste in movies so personally. It's almost like I'm insulting them by not enjoying this movie.

I would have thought that for an older movie like this, the audience might be more mature and less judgemental. But I appear to have been mistaken.

Thanks for your comments, at least there's still a few intelligent people around!

Terrible things, Lawrence. You've done terrible things!

On other boards (one in particular), I've been called a lot of names just because I dislike Citizen Kane and the Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon. I've also made it clear that there is no link between movie tastes and intelligence, and this seems to irk some people.

There are a lot of great classics out there, but some of them just aren't well known. I don't care if film instructors cover those great classics. I watch those films because I enjoy them.

I didn't like Citizen Kane either. From what I remember it was tedious and overrated. I also found Nosferatu boring, and had exactly the same generic comments when I voiced my opinion - "why don't you stick to Transformers", "maybe watch it again in a few years and you'll get it" etc. These people actually believe they're smart for enjoying an old movie, it's laughable.

I have enjoyed a lot of old movies, such as the Charlie Chaplin movies, John Wayne's westerns etc. All sorts really. I've seen most of the top 250 and there's a good variety there from all ages.

Oh yes, there are quite a few people on the boards who are convinced that they are intelligent just because they have seen and understood certain films. *sigh* I've had people say similar things to me as well, just because I don't like Citizen Kane. One comment that I often get is something like "whodunnits aren't for intelligent people". *sigh*

I love 1930s mysteries, movies with titles like:

Murder on the Campus
Murder by Television
Mystery House
The Thirteenth Guest
The Thirteenth Chair

etc.

I love 1940s and early 1950s film noir, including some of the "important" ones like Double Indemnity. Lots of great gangster films came out in the thirties, too.

I think that the late fifties and 1960s were a great time for silly comedies. My favourite actor Jim Hutton was in a number of romantic comedies during that time. There were also a lot of fun comedies released during that time which don't feature him at all, such as Pillow Talk and Come Fly With Me.

As for the "important" films, I do love The Best Years of Our Lives, All About Eve, Planet of the Apes (1960s version), In the Heat of the Night, High and Low, and Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1930s version).

The only one I've seen out of those that you mentioned was Planet of the Apes. I guess there's still loads of old movies that I need to see!

I enjoyed the Apes movies, although I am biased as I'm a sci fi nut. Other "classics" I've enjoyed are Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, It's a Wonderful Life, North by Northwest and a few other Hitchcock movies, the Incredible Shrinking Man and a few others.

A lot of 1940s and 1950s film noir is certainly worth a look. Although I didn't enjoy it, I recommend you start out with The Maltese Falcon, the version starring Humphrey Bogart. Those who complain about remakes tend to forget that this best-known version of the story happens to be the SECOND remake of the original film. There's also: Double Indemnity, The Third Man, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Laura, The Woman in the Window, No Way Out (an early Sidney Poitier film), Sorry Wrong Number, and many others.

Hitchcock films? Have you seen Rope? Dial M For Murder? Those are two of my faves.

As for those early 1930s mysteries, I love them because of the isolated house setting, secret passages, that sort of thing. It doesn't really get any better than that!
