What did you rate ''It Came from Outer Space'' (1953)?

imdb.com/title/tt0045920/ratings

I thought this film was dull and silly when I saw it in a revival theater with my friends. I rated the film a 5 based on that viewing, even though it was in 3-D.

I watched it more recently on DVD and enjoyed it and appreciated it more. There are still bad things in it, as Ray Bradbury will tell you: unnecessary footage of the silly-looking monsters, a few poorly executed scenes. But the story is so good that all that is easy to overlook. The film is probably worth 7/10.

What did you rate it? What do you think of it?

Which ones have you rated 10? Have you rated any below, say, 5?

I gave it a 10, I think it's a perfect science fiction movie of old, better than The Day the Earth Stood Still and as good as Jack Arnold's other classic, The Incredible Shrinking Man, only bettered by Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The plot is fantastic, it's well-directed, the acting is not cheesy and it has a great moral with philosophical undertones.

I would rank It Came from Outer Space well below The Day the Earth Stood Still and Invasion of the Body Snatchers and slightly above The Incredible Shrinking Man. But I'd be happy to watch any of those five movies again.

I rated The Day the Earth Stood Still 10/10. It's just about perfect. The plot is fascinating, the music is wonderfully eerie, the scenes are shot and put together in an exciting and engaging way. The roles are particularly well cast. And it holds up very well to repeat viewings.

I would give standard 2D version at least an 8. I would give the 3D version a 9 or 9.5 as the 3D was used to great advantage. If you ever get a chance, see this in 3D.

I have a merely adequate 3D DVD of this which even through the tinted blue/red glasses reveals some awesome 3D work, without merely resorting to excessive "in your face" type shots.

I do think the story is quite interesting and, while not perfect, does rank near the top of the science fiction fiction genre. I like it when a science fiction movie plays more like a drama then an action adventure.

I gave it a 7 as well. compared to many 50s sci-fi flicks this was a refreshing sight to see story told in this way and not the regular "shoot aliens first ask questions later" manner.

Not sure what to give it, yet. Though I liked it very much and unlike the OP, I thought the aliens looked good and pretty creepy.

The story may be quite charming in its simplicity and all, but the poor acting and the dialogue that´s about as basic - and silly - as it gets, really hurt this number. No way to go higher than 5/10 with it.

I'd say a 6.5

I love the old sci-fi classics, there's nothing like them.
Simpler movies with simpler stories but always atmospherically great

I was a BIT generous and gave it a 7...

As one of the lower budget 'B' films of that decade it was one of the more semi-Classic and well known and good ones.

In my lowly and wretched opinion though, THE best 1950's Sci Fi that to me anyway TOWERS light-years over all others is 'FORBIDDEN PLANET' DAMN that is a good film! (and an exquisitely done Blu-ray too I might add - the visuals are quite literally breath-taking!)

The reason why is because the head of the studio was out of the country for some reason, and the guy who directed it was a quite talented and extremely creative art director. Soooo, since the big guy was gone, he had the VERY rare and unique opportunity to do WHATEVER THE HELL he wanted with almost NO creative restraints what so ever, which was completely unheard of in those days. So, what resulted was this amazing conceptual and cerebral film that was easily 30-40 years ahead of it's time.

BUT... that said, considering this film here in the proper perspective of where it resides in the 1950's Sci Fi cannon, I would honestly say it is one of the better ones...

My experience is pretty similar to yours! I saw it many years ago and thought it was merely average. Saw it again tonight and enjoyed it much more than the first time. My rating went from a 5 to a 7 as well.

I enjoyed the alien POV shots, the desert scenery. I thought the acting, cinematography, etc was fine. I like the non-violent aliens when used well, as in here. 8/10.
