The Boat

After looking at The African Queen, filthy and beat-up as it was, for more than a hour, I’d love to see a picture of a new or restored model.

reply

But would a pristine African Queen have as much character?

reply

No, but I couldn’t help imagining what it must have looked like if well maintained or new. That boat had a lot of deferred maintenance.

reply

'deferred maintenance'

I like that expression! 😂

I saw the boat itself somewhere in the Florida Keys.
It was on a big trailer, and being hauled around to display in different places.
I have a picture of it somewhere.
Great movie.

reply

No kidding? Can you post a link to the boat? I'd love to see it.

reply

Sorry, I don't have the pic online, but I bet you could maybe google it. I doubt they made much revenue on it, and it could have gotten destroyed in a hurricane since ... this was a long time ago.

There is a website for one of the two boats used in the movie
http://africanqueenflkeys.com/gallery.html

The page has a gallery section with photos. If you click on one of the photos, it will open dozens more of the 2012 restoration project (they restored it to the condition as appeared in the film). I believe this is the only one of the movie boats that survived. It is located in the Florida Keys and I know it is the legit boat because it is on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places

Very cool. Thanks so much!
