First Time Viewing...

I'm 14 years old and a lot of people in my age group pretend to love Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe but never truly get into classic film. I am an exception. I just watched Sunset Boulevard for the first time last night and it was GREAT! My mom has always liked it but I've never gotten around to seeing it. I loved it. It's in my top five favorite movies. I just wanted to share that not all young people are so ignorant. (The ending of this movie was totally unexpected although it was there the whole time, you know? I can't explain it. But I loved it!)

"Norma is an older woman that thinks highly of herself and falls in love with a younger man, however, it's all portrayed as unhealthy, whorish, psychotic and self-destructive. If the movie was about an older rich man shacking up with an aspiring young ingénue, it would've been portrayed much differently."

Frankly, I can't think of a single movie in which a relationship between a much older woman and a much younger man is portrayed in a positive light. There aren't many such movies to begin with. The movies that do exist have turned either the man or the woman into a weirdo, or the relationship isn't moral (ex. The Graduate), or some other issue ("Something's Gotta Give"). I guess maybe that's why I can't bring myself to watch this more than once. I saw it about seven years ago...once was enough.

Good to see a movie without planes colliding? I can´t think of one single film where that kind of thing happens.

Well, planes colliding with the ground - must be a few of those. And in real life, planes do collide with each other; it's odd that that hasn't been featured in movies.

Now, thinking about it more DEEPLY, there actually was a mid-air collision in Airport ´75 starring Charlton Heston and Karen Black. Usually, however, mid-air collisions do make for poor dramatic fodder as both participants tend to go down unceremoneously.

And it happens very quickly. No chance of building tension and suspense - typically planes are going so fast the people in them don't even realize what's happened. I guess the old-fashioned dogfights in old WWI movies, with two small planes chasing and buzzing each other, was as close as one could come to the equivalent of the movie car chase. And even then, the planes had guns.

I grew up watching these old movies thanks to my mom.

I would recommend "All About Eve", "Night of the Hunter", "Lawrence of Arabia", most of Hitchcock's movies, Buster Keaton's "The General", Chaplin's "The Great Dictator", Woody Allen's "Bullets Over Broadway". Among musicals, I hold special fondness for "Victor, Victoria" and "Oliver!".

Watch these and you will definitely improve your cinematic culture
