Dr. Sloper a terrible parent

The doctor was about as emotionally abusive as it's possible for any parent to be.

Constantly comparing a daughter unfavorably to her deceased mother is cruel.

I think he got what he deserved at the end when Catherine refused to go to his deathbed: "It's too late!"

the job of a parent is not to dominate but to encourage the dreams of their children.

Great movie.

If Dr. Sloper wanted to be decent about this, he would have said "Catherine, he doesn't love you or any other woman. He loves himself. That's all he's capable of." But no, he faulted her. What angers me is that Dr. Sloper knew this guy was a BAD CATCH and made it about Catherine's "shortcomings" instead of telling her that some guys are just faithless, gold diggers etc.

Yuck.

"We want the finest wines available to humanity. We want them here and we want them now."

Seriously? You must never have experienced emotional cruelty from a parent, or known anyone who did, or even read about anyone who did.

I suspect the real question was not which characters were good and which bad, but rather to suggest that they are all from the upper class and all are messed up because of it. They have too much money or too much greed for money and all the problems that go along with it. Along the way they have lost the ability to be real, authentic humans.
