ending


i've been hearing a lot about this controversial ending. and i wouldn't mind if someone could tell me what it IS.

It wouldn't make sense for Dunson to kill Matt. After all, what Dunson really wanted was to see the value of his 14 years' work - to sell the cattle for a decent profit. Which is what Matt did. That Missouri had not been where the cattle were sold shouldn't have mattered much - Matt did honor Dunson's dedication and years of hard work. Dunson still wanting to kill Matt just because his pride had been hurt would have been too absurd even for his crazed ego.

What made me go hmmm was the fact that Cherry does not do much in the movie, he never turns into the antagonist he seemed to have been designed to become. But maybe that is just one more case of cliche rejection.
