Is this this the most overrated movie of all time?

The theme seems to be that life is horrible and nothing you do really matters.

Of course if you are sensible and buy a lock for your bicycle, certain problems can be avoided.

No. To me, it is a masterpiece. It is very well made, impeccably directed, compassionately acted(especially the boy who played Bruno) and maintains a strong emotional punch in that it is very touching with the odd chilling and redemptive moment too.

It is a great movie with an accurate depiction of the time period it was set in.

Italy had just been through the most horrific war in history and was one of the losers. Times were simply terrible.

The people who criticize are fat Americans who think war is something to laugh at on TV or flip to the next web page when you get sick of hearing about it.

But weren't things, in that time and place, "horrible"? The man's problem was that he had no money for his family (his wife had to pawn or sell the sheets so he could get the bike out of hock, dammit!) - where would he get money to hire someone to watch his bike? Also, the bike, when stolen, was only a few feet away from him as he pursued his honest job.

"S_it happens", whether you're looking out for it, or not. Yes, the man was very unlucky, even moreso than the average person. But if you consider the positives in his life (his wife and son, his friends who tried to help him, the fact that he was not arrested and chargedas a criminal), he was no as unlucky as many are. He and his family live to see another tomorrow and, perhaps, get a break. That is no small gift.

"There's a cure for everything except death", as he says. But even death, in a way, cures all ills. Fortunately, for him, he gives no impression of considering this ultimate out at the end of the film. He'll live to fight on tomorrow - a tomorrow that may be better than today.

If it's not the most overrated film of all time, it's gotta be close.

You're right about the premise. The entire premise of the movie is ridiculous, doing much to spoil the rest of the movie. Although hiring someone to watch the bike is a pretty dumb idea, Antonio could've done any number of things to keep the bike from getting stolen. Most simply, he could've locked it up at all of his stops. Yes, that would've been a pain in the ass, but that's what you do when you have an irreplaceable item. He took his bike to a public place where thousands of people were out of work, hungry, and desperate; and he left it unlocked and unattended. What the F did he think was going to happen? Italians aren't exactly known for their law-abiding nature. Antonio was a moron. He's lucky the bike didn't get taken when he walked into the psychic's apartment. It was just a matter of time before someone took advantage of his stupidity.

A companion piece to "Bicycle Thieves" is Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring". A rich man lets his beautiful young daughter (and only living child) travel alone through the woods without any chaperone or bodyguard. Needless to say that didn't work out too well either.

Is this some kind of joke? Or a bad dream perhaps? All people can think of to talk about regarding Bicycle Thief, is how to prevent a bike getting stolen...

A good chunk of the user base has probably never left America or even been to Italy, hell some are probably ignorant of Italian history. Not to mention I have encounter several people who expect all tv shows and movies to 100% portray reality and make people out to be almost flawless.

Some people should just stick to movies like The Dark Knight. That's a 9 star rated movie for the popcorn generation.

No. That would be Altman's Gosford Park. The most boring and anticlimactic movie ever made.

No. The Shawshank Redemption has a firm grasp on that title.
