Is this this the most overrated movie of all time?

The theme seems to be that life is horrible and nothing you do really matters.

Of course if you are sensible and buy a lock for your bicycle, certain problems can be avoided.

I so totally agree with you. If he hired someone to looked after the bike then it wouldn't be stolen. DUH~~ Poor people at that era were so stupid eh.

The guy didn't have enough money to buy a bicycle. How is he supposed to hire someone?

reply

I dont think this is the most overrated movie of all time.. Just think about when the time that it was made.. Imagine what it did to people emotionally at that time and shortly after... I just watched it and I can honestly say that it could be a bit outdated, only because of the quality of the film which is understandable. The actual story and emotions are definitely not outdated though.. They still strike a chord with the human soul.. I thought it was very good and 90 minutes was perfect...
Think about how many other movies out there that can be considered "overrated".

That's among the most stupid things I ever heard?

Hire someone to look after a bike? In your country people are hired to do that kind of service?

No doubt. All he had to do was chain his bike to his ladder while working. No one could get away with it dragging a ladder.

reply

It was an attempt to renounce the "every man for himself" mindset, and to show the desperation of post-war Italy. Just becasue it was sad doesn't mean that it had nothing to say.

You mean it was communist propaganda? Scriptwriter Cesare Zavattini was a member of the Italian Communist Party.

reply

Yet the film portrays the Communist Party as people who are not interested in helping others, but putting on a stage performance (As seen by their argument with the Vaudeville group over use of the stage).

"Overrated" is really a meaningless term when it comes to works of art. When people say a film, book, or other work of art is "overrated," what they really mean is "Lots of people like it, but I don't." It's why pretty much every movie in the top 200 has a thread exactly like this one. It's also why I try to avoid using the term when it comes to describing films. It's a lazy, attention-grabbing way of saying "I didn't like it."

The only way something can be truly overrated is if its value can be tangibly measured, like, say, a baseball player, or possibly a political leader (though tangible measurement is a bit fuzzier in that case). Still, in that sense, it's possible for a certain aspect of a film can be overrated, like, say, its cultural importance or influence on future filmmakers (which can be divined through interviewing directors and comparing films.

To me, the "English Patient" is overrated. Everyone seems to love it and I think it's dull.

The Bicycle Thieves was great cinema.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

reply

No. Just...no. Not in the least. No way.

The easiest way to validate your own opinions is by agreeing with everyone else.

A lock? I had a bike stolen and the thief just cut the lock. it's just in my humble opinion - imho -

reply

It's an Italian neo-realist film, which are pretty unique. But the story on poverty and the loss of dignity were done well.
