Who Clapped?

Something compelled me to, even though I was sitting completely by myself. And it was quite a moving experience to see these characters from 60 years ago respond to me in my own living room Now that I've seen the movie, I'll probably never have the same experience again, but for a brief moment I believed that it was all very real.

I clapped. I was completely moved by this magical film. I can't wait to watch it with my wife.

I saw it at a theatre today and, even though I was compelled to, didn't clap. Neither did anyone else (unsurprisingly, since the audience consisted of middle-aged German intelligentsia snobs).

That's probably going to haunt me for the rest of my life...

My boyfriend and I did! This was a very sweet and touching movie!

I did too. And it wasn't just because I have lived in Japan since 1985 and have seen a country rebuild itself from the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and is now rebuilding itself since 3/11. It is because I choose to take a moment in time and make it live, make it love, with the invitation of a beautiful scene and an emotional, intelligent director. I do not sit there and wait, wait, wait until I am thoroughly, yes I am now 100% convinced on all emotional and intellectual levels and will now deign to offer my few feeble claps. I also like to clap sad solo hotel pianists who are doing their best, and lonely broke buskers. Why the hell not? A film can come alive, as if it was a concert, if we choose to participate.

I was watching by myself and it was late at night and I didn't want to wake anybody up - but I gave a muted but heartfelt clap.

I've never had a movie engage me in that way before; it was interesting. Albeit somewhat slightly corny, I thought it was effective because I was into the movie and attached to the characters enough. I felt sure it would have been a very special moment in the Japanese theatres upon its initial release. Of course, if people didn't clap, it would probably have just been depressing.

To not clap I think would feel like a betrayal of the characters and of the film - a sign you didn't really care about them. Which is a super-fascinating thing for a movie to offer as a possibility, I think, regardless of which side you're on - whether you did or didn't feel compelled enough to clap.

This is a movie that's just so thrilled to be a movie. Loved it.

I did kind of a quiet clap.

I didn't, but only because it was the middle of the night and people are sleeping lol. I would have otherwise.

I would've clapped if I wasn't too busy crying.
