One of the most boring, overrated films ever.

I couldnt believe how boring this film was. I'm not knocking the subject matter - It is definately important, however the film is one of the most overrated, tired dramas I think I've ever seen. Pity, this could have been an incredible film, instead it just turned into a soap episode on the big screen. 5/10

There are problems with the script. It feels heavy-handed at times. Overall, while not among the best of Kazan's work, it is still a good film.

The cast is solid, especially John Garfield. I imagine that if he lived longer, Garfield would have worked with Kazan several times.

I also liked Richard Schickel's commentary, particularly his comments on Kazan. He wrote a book on him, I believe. I would like to read it someday.

It could have been so much better with a car chase and a few explosions.

I need to thank you for bringing so many of your fellow travelers to the fore, gave me quite few names to put on "IGNORE".

Including yours.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

what's the problem?
Not enough CGI or dinosaurs or zombies or
other idiotic special effects?
Makes a person actually stop and use

It's 'propaganda' alright.
Unless of course it's
happening to you.

The way the film treats its subject matter as great novelty and very literal mindedly makes some (by today's standards) obvious points certainly dates it, but generally it's a solid drama and a story well told - until the final 10-15 minutes which basically consist of one moralizing speech after another, saying the same things over and over and over again (even though a lot of the things are fairly perceptive and certain subtleties recognized). And then there's this big happy ending that's just inappropriate.

Stick to posting about Michael Nouri. You're way out of your depth here.

This one is basically the progenitor of all oscarbait to come.

That, however, doesn't mean that it lacks inspired moments. The beginning is decidedly mediocre, if not outright bad, even the actors seem to realise this and are also mediocre. Then, suddenly, picks up during the first scene with the secretary and becomes quite good. Some bits are maybe even better than good while preachy sequences try to drag it down. As a whole it is still a good movie, but far from great.
