According to Robert Osbourne TCM Bette Davis was offered the part to give her a lighter, comedic role than what she had been doing, she turned it down and
Barbara Stanwick took it.

If Davis had made the movie, we'd be talking about how great she was in it, and how it just wouldn't have been the same if Stanwyck had done it instead.
