joan crawford

bette did an amazing job as fanny, but don't you think joan crawford would have been even better? bette seems quite miscast really, since she's not too convincing as a stunningly beautiful socialite, which is something crawford could do on her worst days.

Despite its obvious flaws (that irritating voice! and some of the incessant gesturing Davis does), this is a great film with a good performance from Davis. I have to agree with you though - Joan Crawford would have done it much better. A lot has been made of how Crawford stalled upon signing with Warner Bros., not making a proper feature film for some time. I've always read that there were no Warner properties that Crawford wanted or was suitable for. One can't help wondering why they cast a woman as dismal looking as Davis in a role of a great beauty whose looks fade. Joan Crawford, indeed, would have been a better choice. She is generally very under-rated for her acting. She could have done wonders with this role.

Nothing would have been better than to have Janie Clarkson come on for a cameo at the end and it prove to be Janie Clarkson. ;)

If you liked this film, see Crawford's Mildred Pierce to compare. Much more enjoyable I thought.
