I can't believe no one here has mentioned the work of Guy Maddin.

I posted on this thread a long time ago, before I'd seen any Maddin, but I just watched "Brand Upon the Brain!" a few months back and thought it was really brilliant. The textures and tones are just unbelievably rich. It reminded me a little bit of Jean Epstein's "La Chute de la Maison Usher" (Fall of the House of Usher) from 1928--mainly the shots of the trees and the beach and the play with silence and sound.

So far, it's the only Maddin film I've seen. What else do you recommend?

Personally I think his most recent feature film My Winnipeg is his best work. I also recommend Careful! and his short film Heart of the World. He's a great director doing things that haven't been done in 80 years :)
