Pronounced "los an-guh-lis" with the "guh" sound as used in "guitar". Not "los an-gel-ees"
Did I hear this right? Hopefully I've managed to describe the difference in sound.
I've never heard that pronunciation before. Is this the original pronunciation? Or just something Robert Cummings did as the character Barry Kane?
Let's use the phonetic symbols and get this right finally.
The Spanish pronunciation is /ləʊs ˈɑ:ŋhɑ:leɪs/ PERIOD!
1. Spanish doesn't diphthongize vowels.
2. The g is pronounced as a voiceless velar fricative, not a voiceless vocal fricative.
In other words, the real Spanish pronunciation is:
/los ˈaŋxeles/
If it has a hard g, the n has to be velar.
shareBy comparison like French inspired New Orleans, Louisville, named after King Louis the 16th, husband of Marie Antoinette, has had similar various pronuciations. It is literally Loueeville and that is bottom line correct. This is how the media says it. But locals will speed it up say and louvul, or louavul. Worst of all and completely incorrect some African Americans will say Lewisville - but there was never a King Lewis! As far as LA, as a mid-westerner, I have always said los ANgelas.
