Casablanca or Citizen Kane?
Thoughts?
shareCasablanca is a better story, ergo a better movie, but Citizen Kane is the staple of film-making. Before it all shots in movies were static, i.e. only straight on, or close-ups. Orson Wells used shots from below, overhead, and paid more attention to shot composition. There is one shot in particular (where Kane's love nest has been discovered, and he's standing at the top of the stairs, confronting the man who is going to expose it) that, if it's looked at as a still photo, will make your eyes cross.

Neither are among my favourites, I tend to prefer comedies. But Casablanca undoubtedly a lot more enjoyable than Citizen Kane, which I found very dull.
shareI will chose Casablanca every time, for the same reason I maintain How Green Was My Valley deserved the Oscar for best film over Kane, because Kane is a technical masterpiece that advanced filmmaking, but to be a truly great film you must engage the audience emotionally as well as intellectually, and Kane falls short in this respect. I have watched Casablanca a dozen times for every time I watched Kane. Also because Claude Rains, in one of his finest roles.
It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices
Both are so good that they break children's brains. Honestly, 21st century tastes have devolved in to millennials disliking anything that doesn't have wizards or explosions.

I like Casablanca a lot more. Only seen Citizen Kane once, and, in terms of entertainment value, I thought it was decent. I've seen Casablanca thrice so far and it holds up as the finest movies ever made. Far more than just a love story, it's a truly inspiring war film about sacrifice and the struggle against fascism that continues to this present day.
shareCitizen Kane, while a very entertaining movie, is literary art.
Casablanca, while a very well made movie, is popular art.
We respect and enjoy Kane.
We love Casablanca.

As this is a Casablanca board the responses to this question may be slightly biased! I love them both but am more familiar with Citizen Kane so it would probably be my choice. Ask me tomorrow, however, and I may choose Casablanca.
sharePoint well taken. I have them both on my DVR, and neither is going to be erased. They're so different that I don't really feel the need to compare them; I would rather just enjoy the hell out of each for what it is.

I was watching Casablanca tonight and was asking myself the same question.
Casablanca is NEVER boring. Every scene is perfect and needed.
That said, Citizen Kane has amazing music, amazing photography, and an unforgettable ending that might rival Casablanca's classic ending.
I might give the edge to Kane, but Casablanca should also be considered.
I wanted to enjoy Citizen Kane but what a snooze-fest. Casablanca anyday !!
