Hitchcock's worst?

Sorry this forum needs one of these. I have yet to see a Hitchcock film that was as painful to sit through as this one. I kept waiting for it to get interesting and it never did! Wheres the suspense? *Spoiler* Are you telling me you guys didnt see it coming that Max was involved with his wife's death? Maybe just the last 5 minutes were at all suprising but not worth the 2 hours of seeing that tight wooden Olivier brooding over and over again.

Sometimes people have opinions that are so incredibly different to ours that we can't understand them.

And sometimes people have opinions that are just plain wrong as OP does. :)

no.

The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

I wouldn't consider this his best but it's far from his worst. I think some viewers go into it expecting a purely Hitchcock film but it's actually rather different from his other films. It's not quite as precise but maybe more emotional than most of his other work. And so people are disappointed. Taken on it's own, without the pressure of measuring up to Hitchcock's best work, Rebecca is a triumph in many ways. It's loaded with atmosphere and gorgeously shot. There are a couple of outstanding performances, particularly Joan Fontaine's turn as Mrs. de Winter. The actual plot is probably the true weak link of the film. I like to put Rebecca on when I'm in the mood for something darkly Gothic but not overbearing.

On my first viewing I didn't care for this film.. on my second viewing, I absolutely loved it!
This film is one of Hitchcocks very best..

Having said that, I tried to watch Shadow of a Doubt again because I hated it the first time around but my opinion has not changed regarding that one. Probably the most overrated Hitchcock film in my opinion.

I actually love this movie. True it is different than most Hitchcock films but certainly not awful. Not as grand as Rear Window which is my fave film, by Hitchcock, but certainly not his worst.

reply

Hmmm?
No, it was one of his best.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame

If you think "Rebecca" is Hitchcock's worst -- and it is actually one of his best -- you obviously haven't seen "Topaz."

reply

Without any doubt, one of Hitchcock's best.
