I hate musicals…
But I love this.
shareI don't go out of my way to see musicals, but any cinephile would be remiss in ignoring the classics. Highly recommend the documentary That's Entertainment (1974) and its two sequels to gain a 10,000' overview and appreciation for them.
shareAgreed. Singing in the Rain is a classic, gotta love Gene Kelly.
shareThat was the first one to come to mind, and for great reason: it's freaking fantastic. Then so many other classics kept popping up like On the Town (1949), West Side Story (1961), An American in Paris (1951), etc. then I remembered that great doc. series, which should cover the greats. But even beyond the classics and to present day, there are so many awesome movies that fall in to that category:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
The Blues Brothers (1980)
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny (2006)
The Muppet Movie (1979)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Across the Universe (2007)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
etc., etc.
That to say "I hate musicals" might not be exactly accurate. I love horror movies, but I'll be the first to admit there are an insane number of terrible ones made.
Aa a kid "The Music Man" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" were on constant rotation on broadcast TV and they kind of sunk in to my psyche. Now I am fond of them and find a good musical with good memorable songs entertaining.
shareThis might be a stretch, but hear me out. Your namesake and the FF were some of the first comics I remember loving, yet every moving picture adaptation of the source material has been disappointing. How about a SS musical? It's an epic tragedy of Wagnerian proportions; maybe even an opera? Couldn't be worse than previous efforts...

sharei see this more of a fantasy adventure. especially the last half. the songs are good. it's nice to look at. little shop of horrors is another fantasy sci f one i like.
shareI have the same opinion because the songs are short and don't really distract from the story. Willy Wonka would also fall in this category (barring the awful 'Cheer up Charlie" song).

And the songs were well written - most of them anyway - not like a lot of animated movies where it seems expected that you have to have at least
5 songs - even if they are awful.
I hate musicals, too; but Oz and The Sound of Music are exceptions to my hatred. It's probably because the songs are actually good and Judy Garland and Julie Andrews have phenomenal voices without doing any vocal gymnastics.
