The lion is a coward. But, there is no such thing as a cowardly lion. They are an apex predator and king of the jungle. There is no way a lion can grow up to adulthood being a coward. It could never survive

In the movie, he's an anthropomorphic comedy lion. It isn't a documentary about African predators.

Oz is not of this world. Clearly lions evolved differently there.
