Why do people slam this movie?

I had fallen in love with this movie back in the spring of 1991, right when the Kevin Costner version came out. Costner quoted about his distaste for '38's 'feathered caps and green tights' and other people sided with the view that the original film, with its Technicolor and romantic depiction was not serious enough compared to PRINCE OF THIEVES. I remember clashing with my siblings, who thought Costner's version was cooler (Whatever...)
And recently, Ridley Scott also slammed the original versions because they deviated from authenticity and portrayed Robin as some dainty Technicolor fop.
I feel this criticism is unfair. It's not like Warner Brothers made some mistake in treatment. This was one of their first Technicolor films, and so wanted to use the color at its best potential. And their source were romantic storybook with their lush illustrations of Knights, maidens, and Robin Hood. They were not looking for historical accuracy (which brings up the question: should Robin Hood- with his unrealistic distribution of wealth and atmosphere of fun & adventure- be treated in a real-life fashion?); they were making a movie, not a history lesson.
Furthermore, the backlash is a disservice to Flynn's performance. Yes, green tights and a feathered cap is a ridiculous getup to take seriously...BUT Flynn makes it work! That he does make it work shows REAL talent, and makes his Robin cooler than Costner's (that guy's talents had better use in modern-day roles). I could bet Russel Crowe would have been just as successful with a feathered cap! So what's the deal?

I would argue that if the Crowe version of Robin Hood were released in the 1930's it would have been more of a failure than when it was released today. Movie audiences of the day wouldn't have tolerated such a bleak, miserable vision that Ridley Scott portrayed. Heck, it probably wouldn't even had made it past the studio heads for release and Scott would have been cast out into the darkness where there is gnashing of teeth.

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.

Nice Biblical reference, Vega

Okay folks, show's over, nothing to see here!

reply

Not me. Plain and simple, this was one of the best movies ever made.

Great entertainment for the whole family.

reply

I didn't know people did slam this. They shouldn't, as this is the definitive version and nothing as ever even come remotely close to it.

reply

I have no idea why anyone slams this movie. It's my FAVORITE movie of all time. It's fun from beginning to end AND Erich Korngold's score is one of the best film scores ever and in fact he basically created what we still expect from the score for an epic film.

I would slam this movie because :

1- I think the costumes were made in a cheap Chinese warehouse although I understand that they should wear flashy dresses to dazzle the audiences because of Technicolor .
2- I'm not infatuated with Errol Flyyn like most of you( ok ,that's not even an argument).
3- Robin Hood looks like a grasshopper , green and jumping around all the time.
4- The main purpose of the film was generating huge revenue and capitalize on the name of Errol Flynn not deliver a particularly good film .
5- The fight scenes are ludicrous.
6- That scene where Sir Guy throws a set of candles and Robin Hood bravely defends himself with a chair :D

On the other hand this is a light-hearted comedy /action/drama that almost everyone enjoys and you don't have to think a lot( in fact the lesser you think the more you will enjoy this film ). This is also by far the best Robin Hood version better than Kevin Costner and Douglas Fairbanks ones.

He was not afraid to die, O brave Sir Robin!
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin!

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken;
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away;
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Robin!

I have loved this movie for over 50 years and will watch it repeatedly for hopefully another 50 years. It is perfection imho: casting, the script, the direction, choreographing of the fight scenes, music and acting. Perfect from beginning to end.

Did you know that Basil Rathbone was known as Hollywood's most accomplished swordsman and fencer? And that he tutored Errol Flynn in swordfighting?

I never understand why people expect films made 77 years ago to achieve production standards of the modern day, or expect every narrative to capture the gritty realism of today's films. I didn't even get why those people bother watching these old films if that is what they are expecting. Just spare yourselves.

This film was a huge success when it was released. I was rather surprised to discover it was only the forth highest grossing film of the year. I tend to believe the people of 1938 were probably quite satisfied with The Adventures of Robin Hood. I highly doubt a good number of them, if any, left the theater complaining about hokey dialogue and terrible costumes. It was widely praised by critics, was nominated for Best Picture and won an Oscar for art direction.

If a persons heart is not moved when Marion goes to the Saracen to help the Merry Men hatch a plan to save Robin from the gallows then I really don't understand why that person bothers watching movies at all.

Indeed, JPLogan54.

A major pet peeve of mine is posters who come to the message boards of movies and actors they don't like and try to evangelize the rest of us to their way of thinking. Yet while I have no use for, say, any of the Transformers flicks, you'll never find me on any of the Transformers boards trashing those movies because I'd rather spend my IMDb time on the message boards of films and actors I happen to like or at that at least intrigue me.

I don't know how anyone can slam this movie. I know people have their own opinions and all.. but nothing in particular stands out in my mind that could render this movie as terrible. For a movie made in 1938, it still looks good to me when I watched it on Blu-ray.

I must of seen it 50 times and I still love it. Errol is so great to watch and no one these days could play this role as good as he did.

Hear, hear, Vanessa_x!

This movie just oozes with wit, humor, action & adventure, and all while promoting human rights and kindness toward the downtrodden. How can anyone go wrong who watches THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD?
