Will I laugh at this?

I'm going to watch this film tomorrow. Will I laugh at this?

I think Sacha Baron Cohen, South park, The Office, Monty Python(some)are funny.

Why I ask is because my friend who has studied film, claims that this film is untouchable in many people's eyes and that Modern Times isn't funny these days.

reply

Well ... so did you laugh?

I guess no matter what kind of movies you like, Chaplin has the ability to make you laugh.

Its made people laugh for 70 years now .. and I'm sure my grandchildren will find it funny too (i'm 25 now btw)

reply

I just watched it tonight, and I thought it was hilarious. This was my first Charlie Chaplin film, and now I know why he's considered the greatest physical comedy actor of all time. He is brilliant!

Last Film Seen:
* My Man Godfrey (1936, Gregory La Cava) - (7/10)

reply

Didn't think it was funny. The food machine was decent though

reply

Ah well .. too bad ..

reply

Yeah t'is a shame, this movie was amazing, too bad you didnt find it funny, i was almost in stitches when i 1st watched the tramp get affected by the drugs.

reply

I love this movie..just saw it for the first time a couple days ago, very funny...charlie chapman is the best

reply

oh...
this film is so absolutely funny!

I do think that this is much funnier than the dictator, but that doesn't mean that this is a better movie. The dictator makes you think more than laugh, but modern times makes you laugh more than you ever thought you could. And there's still a lot to think about. Charlie was ahead of time when he made this and i think everyone should see this.

reply

I haven't seen Dictator. I did see City Lights and The Gold Rush. Both good, especially City Lights. But Modern Times is still my favorite. Because:

Funny? Yes. Not just slapstick humor. It has subtlety. I loved the stomach gurgling scene with the preacher's wife.

A love story? It is in the top ten IMDB list of love stories. Unlikely, but touching and haunting.

Social Comment? Yes, a wealth. On homelessness, hunger, repression, dehumanization of the mechanical world.

Personal Adjustment? Definitely. If anyone has ever felt left out or not able to fit in, this is a movie for you. It also comments on the little persons' struggles against the big and powerful.

And to me, Paulette is enchanting.

P.S. For an earlier Chaplin film, check out The Kid.

I just want to add that Modern Times is my favorite Chaplin film, and I find it hysterically funny in parts, but overall I think his funniest film is "The Circus."

reply

I love The Circus, though it usually isn't ranked with Chaplin's big five. I had forgotten I posted on this thread. I saw Dictator and liked it, even the long speech at the end. Still, MT, The Kid, The Circus are my favs. CL is very good, right there with the others I guess, but not quite as good as MT to me.

I only caught last part of it (had to finish West Side Story from other channel) but I still found it very funny, laughed half the time. To me felt like perfect movie to watch with family (at any age), not all kind of humours unite 20-year old and 50-60 -year olds like that.

It could've been the company that made it so laughable, but even alone I'd still consider it funny if not laughable.

reply

i laughed.

will I laugh at this? is it suitable for an 8 year old? do I have a f--king brain in my head? Apparently not! Dimwit!

reply

But importantly will I laugh at this as I'm thinking of watching it so I'd like to know ahead of time if I'm going to find it funny.

For Example things I find funny:
The Marx Brothers
Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job
Frisky Dingo
Youtube videos of fatal accidents

Even if you hate Uwe Boll, give Postal a try, be offended or entertained.

reply

The point is comedy is subjective. I might find something screamingly funny that you wouldn't laugh at at all.

reply

I hate Napoleon Dynamite

I hate Knocked Up.

I am afraid that people who like fart jokes and nudity-profanity comedy, will not appreciate all time classic, the great CC...

reply

That doesn't count towards all people. While I think farting is one of the highest forms of comedy, I found Modern Times quite funny. Maybe I'm a special breed, who knows.
