I think you're just a dumb ass. I am also STUCK in a generation that thinks twilight is an awesome book and movie series but I know Modern Times is a great movie but then again you're probably too stuck on yourself and your generation to realize that this generation SUCKS and has barely any taste in movies.

reply

Yes, it seems each successive generation ignores values and embraces more tripe.

reply

Don't worry. You will definitely appreciate classic movies when you are over thirty.

There are dopes who think the Beatles stink and that Coors light is a good beer.

The Beatles are a little overrated.
And if you don't feel like paying much, Coors Light isn't so bad.

I've enjoyed reading the posts of this thread. It seems that on every imdb board, there is someone who says, "this is a crap film". This is not a bad thing. It sparks discussion. And a lot of this discussion has been rather good.

Personally, I don't like silents as they tend to be either melodramatic, or slapstick. I like Chaplin's Tramp-ballets, but he didn't become funny until he started working with sound. Generally speaking, films were much better once they introduced sound.

dailyshampoo48: I find most of Chaplin's works, talkies OR silents, to be clever, witty and full of a rich depth of his understanding of human nature. I don't quite understand why THE KID, THE GOLD RUSH, THE CIRCUS, etc., don't do it for you but to me the humor in these is timeless. When my nephews and nieces were still preteens they watched a video of The Gold Rush with me and were in stitches from start to finish.

Then again, tastes vary and I am by no means knocking your own perceptions.

Okay folks, show's over, nothing to see here!

see this is what I call constructive argument. I wish that more people who disagreed with me on these boards did so with such maturity.

I enjoyed the kid and thought gold rush was okay, but I think your "the little ones enjoy it" example to really be at the heart of why I am not a huge chaplin fan. you simply cannot communicate very much without speech, and his films are therfore and by necessity simplistic. admittedly his work is exceptional considering the technology, but I simply do not like the silent directors -- and this includes von sternberg and demille and others who made their name in the 20s. however, I find the admittedy "stagey" and grainy early sound films of the 1930s to be superior to anything made since. so it must be more than the technology; it must also be chaplin.

reply

Constructive argument? here it is:

The silents were awesome! With all that mascara and pancake and the shaky jitters, was everybody on too much coke or what!! Admit it, from my perspective, the new talkies were almost subdued, eh? (just yankin' your chain).

hi moab. :)

the one thing which was better in the silents was joan crawford, as every time she speaks it brings back faye dunaway's eerily spot-on impression in mommie dearest.

Ah crap! Just when I decided to wean off lithium you have to bring up

and speaking of funny, that film was oddly funny. when joan screams, "WHY CAN'T YOU TREAT ME WITH THE RESPECT I DESERVE??!!!" I screamed it for her because I saw that one coming 100 miles away. now it just makes me chuckle. a mirthless, hollow chuckle.

reply

Interesting choice to confess that on a public forum. However, the film lies squarely within the guidelines for underground cinema, eh? Simultaneously horrifying, sickening, funny, and appealing to only a select audience. A camp cornucopia.

I have no shame it seems. I tell potential romantic partners that I like Valley Girl because it scares away the borings and insecures.

And, yeah, it's a fabulous movie, and not nearly so bad as most think it is. In fact, I'd submit that it is rather good. :)

Seeing as the OP is probably at least 20 years old now, I would hope he would have more of an appreciation for this film if he watched it again.
