Cockney Accent

It's hard to believe that it's Bette Davis.

There were many comments here about Davis' Cockney accent. But they assume that a straight Cockney accent is what she was going for, but I tend to doubt that was the case. This was the time of the famous Mid-Atlantic Accent which was intended to be easily intelligible to both British and American audiences. I think she was trying to find a bridge between Cockney and MAA. Back in 1934 most actors didn't have the same idea about strict adherence to a particular accent the way they would do it later when people like Meryl Streep came along.
