If remade?
Just for fun, though I do not like remakes, if this movie was now remade, who would you choose for the main characters?

shareit would be impossible for me to remake this movie because I would be looking for someone who favors greta garbo to play her character but i'll give it a shot just for kicks
Grusinskaya.....Gwenylth Paltrow....I think she favors GG it'd be interesting to see if she has a flair for the melodramatic
Baron Felix von Geigern.....George Clooney...I think he has that old hollywood quality to him and i think it would be an role easy for him to slip into. He usually plays charming thieves
Flaemmchen.....Reese Witherspoon...she can be young and attractive and sassy I think..she would do a good job
Preysing....Clive Owen....difficult character to cast..I can't think of anyone who cuts an intimidating figure...I'd say clive owen I think he fits the stature...don't know if he could play a bad guy though...he kind of has the handsome thing working against him
Dr. Otternschlag.....Patrick Stewart...no question about it as far as looks and the voice
Otto Kringelein.....Dustin Hoffman...Lately i've become a dustin hoffman fan and I think he's a terrific character actor and would do wonderful in this role...and i think he'd be able to pull off self pity and still have the audience feel for him
That's my cast I think that's a pretty good cast...and to direct it I would choose
Wes Anderson I think he could pull off the dark drama/comedic drama duality this film IMO has and I think he works well with ensembles.
I think it'd be a decent remake although I LOVE Garbo and wouldn't want anyone remaking her movie.

Grusinkaya: Gweneth Paltrow...not completely satisfied with that, but who else fits that part? Maybe Kirsten Dunst in 5 years, or in an alternate universe Bjork.
Baron: Clooney seems perfect for it.
Flaemmchen: Natalie Portman, or with the right direction, Debra Messing.
Preysing: Clive Owens...wouldn't have thought of him first, but he'd be fantastic.
Otternschlag: I like Patrick Stewart, but for the sake of throwing out something different, Ian McKlellan.
Otto: William H. Macy would be heartbraking. Anthony Hopkins possibly. If the character was reconceived (not rewritten), John Mahoney could be great.
Dir: the only one I would trust is Woody Allen...good with tightly interwoven storylines and brings out some actors' best performances.
"You know, I never thought anything so beautiful could come to me."
Grusinkaya: Gweneth Paltrow is an obvious choice and she would be good. I could see Meryl Streep doing it as well, although probably a little old for a ballerina, but if you changed froman ballerina to a theater actress she would be perfect. Call me crazy but I could see Madonna pulling off a decent performance if the script was updated and you made the character a fading singer instead of a ballerina. I know putting Madonna and Garbo in the same sentence is sacriledge, but let's face it, they don't make them like Garbo anymore.
Baron: Clooney would be excellent. I think James Spader could be interesting as well. (If you haven't seen him in anything since Beverly Hills Cop or Mannequin please check out Secretary to see what I mean; actually check it out anyway it is an amazing film)
Otto Kringelein: I like William H. Macy for this role. Bill Paxton, maybe.
Flaemmchen: Messing is an interesting choice, I could see it. I can see Jolie or Witherspoon as well, or perhaps Selma Blair.
Preysing: Tim Curry or Chris Walken.
Otternschlag: If I could pick anyone of all time I'd go with Yul Brenner. Choosing from actors today, Al Pacino or James Caan.
Preysing: I pictured Liam Neeson as I read your list. (Not on board with the idea either of remaking a classic and dated -- i.e., of its time -- film such as this.)
For Gusinskaya, perhaps 1990s Gwyneth, but by now she has attracted too much controversy with her silly, extravagant lifestyle and advice. I wouldn't pay to see her. I'm sure there's a better choice (please don't say Keira Knightly -- not much of an actor), but I don't have an idea at the moment.
I hate remakes so much I'd have to use casting to sabotage it. How about Paris Hilton as Flaemmchen, Brintney Spears as Grusinskaya, Tom Green as the Baron, The Rock as Preysing and Justin Guarini as Mr. Kringlein.
shareGrusinskaya ... Cate Blanchett - glamorous and vulnerable
Baron Felix von Geigern ... George Clooney - great choice, but how about Ralph Fiennes for more of that old-world breeding and doomed aristocratic air, or better yet - Daniel Day Lewis?
Flaemmchen ... Scarlett Johannson
Otto Kringelein ... Dustin Hoffman - brilliant
Preysing ... James Cromwell - he can do pompous and intolerant very well
Dr. Otternschlag ... Bill Murray - think about it!
Director- Scorcese

In 1933 many of the cast in this movie also made Dinner at Eight. It was remade as a tv movie in 1989. Most remakes cannot reach the same level as the original.
Grusinskaya: Marion Cotillard; she played Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose".
I loved William H. Macy in "Door to Door" and I could really see him as Kringelein. Brilliant!!!
Scarlett Johannson as Flaemmchen
Gerard Depardieu or Jeremy Irons as von Preysing
Christopher Plummer as Otternschlag... Paul Newman?
Felix von Geigern.... based on the portrayal of Young Jolyan he gave in "The Forsyte Saga", I am going with Rupert Graves.

I don't think they should remake the movie, but they should make a movie version of the musical, which is AMAZING!
shareGrusinskaya - Cate Blanchett
The Baron - Clive Owen
Flaemmechen - Carey Mulligan
Preysing - GĂ©rard Depardieu
Kringelein - Richard Griffiths
Dr Otternschlag - Ian McKellen
Suzette - Imelda Staunton
