Joan Crawford steals the movie!

I really didn't like the Garbo's performance. I think she was overacting almost all the time [too obvious], whereas Crawford did a GREAT JOB. Her beauty in it was absolutely stunning, and her performance was indeed terrific, for me, even better than in Mildred Pierce.

To err is human, but it feels divine.

I totally agree with the OP (about JC, not necessarily GG). I watched this movie for the first time last month and I had never seen Joan Crawford in anything... after that, I became a fan! She was absolutely breathtaking, both looks and acting-wise.

Too bad there wasn't a Best Supporting Actress category back then, cuz the Oscar would definitely be hers.

As far as I'm concerned Crawford could have been placed in the Best Actress category. Despite Garbo's higher billing, Crawford has as much screen time if not more and frankly the juicier role, or at least I think so. Acting-wise she is the STAR of the show, in my opinion.

She's certainly the main reasonwhy I would watch the film again. I love the previously mentioned scene with herself and John Barrymore and when she's typing the letter for Wallace Beery and the camera cuts to her legs briefly- VERY smartly done!

I agree, Joan's performance was so natural (especially compared to Garbo's). Even more natural than many of her later performances! She was great to watch. A performance surprisingly ahead of its time for sure.

I couldn't agree more! I certainly prefer her performance in "Grand Hotel" over she did in "Mildred Pierce".

Thanks for writing.

PS. I do love "Carrie White", by the way

Miss Jane Russell ROCKS!!!

This is the first movie that I have seen Joan Crawford in but I thought she was phenomenal.

I'm glad to hear that! I'm pretty sure you will keep up that opinion as you watch more of her fabulous work.

I thought Garbo stood out and was best in the film followed by Lionel Barrymore...but then, I like strong performances as much as the subtle style popular by today's film fans. She cracks me up. I preferred Crawford in Mildred Pierce where she was wonderful. I do not find her beautiful in the least and her mouth is so distracting to me...like that of a blow up doll. But then, Garbo looks like a tranny to me which is also distracting. Good film.

I do like the whole film, including the whole cast, of course; but I can't deny the fact I found Garbo's performance quite over the top, uneasy and dated, whereas Crawford's was natural, sassy and modern. She was excellent in "Mildred Pierce", I totally agree, but I feel her performance in "Grand Hotel" much more honest, spontaneous and vital.

Well, there are tastes and tastes when it comes to the beauty thing, but I firmly think that Crawford was a real stunner back in her day, especially in the early '30s (Grand Hotel, Rain, Dancing Girl, etc.) Her eyes and bone structure were just amazing.

Glad to know that you agree! Her fascinating looks and incredible performance are definitely the best thing about the picture.

I absolutely agree. Garbo overacted every scene and Crawford was great. Who in the world would choose the diva over the easygoing Crawford. What could Berrymore's character be thinking and Crawford was hotter. I don't get it.
