the most famous Football player ever?

he was known for being a decent tight end but now he is famous around the world. what a life.

basically anyone could date Taylor for 6 months and have your career and life boosted instantly.

reply

He'll never be more famous than Brady or Manning or Montana or Marino or Sweetness or Barry Sanders or Jim Brown...the list goes on and on. The moment Taylor kicks him out of her bed, he'll retire into obscurity.

reply

not sure, who knows. just tired of seeing him in every commercial. and who was sweetness? my brain isnt working today.

reply

Walter Payton, the greatest running back ever.

reply

ah cool thanks. I forgot all about that. and he was only 46 when he died.

he was one of the greats for sure....

reply

It is boring seeing him everywhere.

Sweetness was Walter Payton, the greatest running back of all time (with respect to Jim Brown and Barry Sanders, who were also amazing).

reply

From a football perspective, he was more than just a "decent" tight end. He's probably the greatest tight end of all time. Certainly a future Hall-of-Famer on account of both his massive personal stats and Super Bowl rings. With that said, there is fame ceiling for NFL tight ends, and so he probably could never be quite as famous as an elite quarterback or running back.

However once any athlete becomes romantically involved with a massive celebrity from a different walk of life, it introduces the player to people who may never have heard of him. So yes, his fame now has ballooned due to Taylor Swift.

reply

Greatest tight end of all time = Antonio Gates.

reply

lol, I was just thinking about him too. he played for like 15 years. unfortunately tight ends get forgotten pretty easily.

reply

If we're going on a per-season basis, then Kelce is actually doing better than Antonio Gates, and even better than Tony Gonzales. Kelce is only in his 11th season of playing and has seven seasons of 1000+ yards receiving, plus three seasons of 10+ TDs. Gates had only two seasons of 1000+ yds. plus four seasons of 10+ TDs over 15 seasons. Oh, and don't forget about Kelce's three SB rings.

But yeah, if you're talking about a career, then the title of best TE would be up for grabs. Gates, Gonzales, Kelce, and Jason Witten would all be in the conversation.

reply

O. J. Simpson would like a word...

reply

interesting dilemma. I think TayTay is more famous than OJ. by proxy that would make Travis the most famous football player in the world.

reply

Likely a generational thing. Never been much in to American football, nor *current* pop music. Off the top of my head, these are the players I can name other than Orenthal: Rosie Greer, "Mean" Joe Greene, William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Tom Brady... I'd probably recognize a bunch more names if I heard them, but I really tried for at least half a minute just now and gave up.

reply

Just got back from Walmart and the 2 Kelce brothers' faces are on everything. Why? Because one person made them both famous.

reply

The OP's namesake ... Joe Willie, Broadway Joe Namath. He was a worldwide celebrity before the internet and didn't need a famous girlfriend.
