What the..? The guy is nr. 4 in the world and has already been around for quite a few years. I even know he has an older brother who also plays tennis and I hardly even watch the sport anymore. He also won gold at the Olympics this year and I didn't watch one second of that at all!

reply

tennis is not exactly the number one sport in north america these days. it peaked in the 1970s.

reply

Like I said, I don't watch it anymore and even I know this guy. 🤷‍♀️

reply

the sport is dominated by europeans who are not well known here. except for two or three big names.

reply

How about Sampras, Agassi, Capriati, the Williams sisters? I think you exaggerate when you say it peaked in the 70s. What I can believe is that you guys only care about North American players.😌

reply

Tennis is seen as an elitist sport today. It's very niche. A big name does help but the sport got replaced by golf.

Not according to this list:

Golf is seen as less elitist than tennis???

reply

i don't believe. everyone plays golf, no one plays tennis anymore. most of the tennis courts have been closed here.

I started following tennis about 5 years ago. A few friends explained to me that when Sampras retired around 2002 the popularity of the sport dropped dramatically in the U.S. Thankfully we have Serena but tennis in the U.S. is nowhere near as popular as it was from 70's-02. A lot of other once popular sports have dropped off the radar as well..the one saving grace for tennis is it's still popular to watch on TV. Golf has taken a bigger hit believe it or not. I've heard that Tiger Woods was the only player that was keeping the sport from collapsing, now that day has come and golf is really hurting.

The Joker is losing badly! The 34 year old is over the hill...at least when facing 25 year old Medvedev!
