Atmospheric, somber music, profound lyrics...
Backed up with Karaoke Night vocals.
shareWhen they started out, they were basically a straight up punk rock band, akin to Sex Pistols and The Clash.
sharehaha that whole genre of music sounds like that. it's an acquired taste maybe but I dig it.
shareI would place bands like The Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus in the same genre, but their singers are so much better than Ian Curtis, perhaps they don't really belong in the same genre.
I know the guy had a tragic life and all, but it's hard to find anything positive to say about his vocals. I think the actor who played him in "Control" and sang the songs had the same basic sort of voice, but his singing had some subtle quality that Curtis's did not, and made the songs actually listenable. I wish he and the surviving members of Joy Divison would re=record their entire catalogue.
Haha. I like Curtis' voice but that's an apt description. His voice is deep and grainy but it works with raw punk.
shareHard disagree here. Curtis was a talented singer but his vocal range was highly unusual for a band making radio hits like Joy Division. What you are dismissing as a "karaoke night" voice is more an indication of your lack of appreciation for a vocal range outside of what is present in the vast majority of popular music.
