We want more of this in the UK

We have too many prisoners, says new PM Starmer
Sir Keir Starmer has said he wants to reduce the number of people going to prison through renewed efforts to cut reoffending.
In his first press conference as prime minister, Sir Keir said too many people found themselves back in jail "relatively quickly" after being sent there.
He added that intervening to prevent young people committing knife crime would be an early priority for his new government.
But he said there would be no "overnight solution" to prison overcrowding, adding: "We’ve got too many prisoners, not enough prisons."
It comes after he appointed a businessman as his prisons minister who has previously said only a third of prisoners should be there.
Anyone who commits a "knife crime" needs to be in prison. That's the only reliable way to prevent them from committing another knife crime against innocent people outside of prison. The solution for not having enough prisons is to build more prisons. Well, you vote for an idiot leftist, and you have to take the consequences.
shareThat 'idiot leftist' used to be the Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales. There's an outside chance, therefore, that he knows rather more about the UK's justice system and its current issues than some random American twat on the internet.
shareStick to your own country's politics.
shareThe quote specifically said *intervening* to prevent young people from committing knife crime. So intervention before it escalates.

Well... yeah. He's right. It's also something many Conservatives have commented on in recent years. Ken Clarke, for example, when he was Justice Secretary. So it's not a partisan or ideological issue, but a pragmatic one.
For now, Labour -- just like the Conservatives before them -- will have few options but to continue with early release programmes (which is, understandably unpopular with the public.)
But longer-term it will need to build new prisons. And, moreover, it will need to send fewer people to prison and bring the UK prison population closer to those of continental Europe. Prevention and tackling recidivism is the palatable option as the alternative to avoiding high prison numbers is reducing custodial sentences -- which wouldn't go down with the electorate any better than early release does.

No.
Prisoners are already being released early due to overcrowding. Labour have confirmed that they will have no option but to continue with the mess they inherited from the Conservatives until they have had time to reform the situation (which oddly enough they haven't managed to do after five days.) The prisons are at crisis point due to Tory neglect and incompetence.
Starmer has appointed a man who is is heavily invested in prison reform -- like a modern Elizabeth Fry. He is a man who has been running a successful, nationwide business for a long time that employs ex-prisoners as a matter of principle. Rehabilitation, training and job opportunities are precisely the things he is interested in, hence the emphasis Starmer places on tackling recidivism.
But I love how confidently you people wade into topics you know absolutely nothing about happening in countries that are not your own. I might start returning the favour and have know-nothing opinions about Margaret Beazley.
The reason criminals are behind bars is because they committed a crime. Doesn't matter what the government is.
shareIt's unclear what you're attempting to tell me.
shareI'll try and make it clearer for you;
You commit a crime,
You go behind bars.
Let me put it another way too: you aren't adding anything. What you're saying is a screamingly obvious truism that no-one under the age of about six could possibly be unaware of. Furthermore, it has absolutely nothing to do with anything I've written here.
shareMaybe this is the reason for overcrowded jails
