She grew up in a family with connections in the entertainment industry who got her involved from her childhood and later got her into Juilliard and she pretends she had a rough childhood and made it on her own. It seems to be a common thread in so many of these so-called feminists and outspoken activist types in Hollywood. They had the opportunity for fame and riches given to them and pretend like they struggled for it.
