Hello Kel, I do see your points about Jamie Chung and how both she and
other Asian actresses in Hollywood keep on perpetuating negative
stereotypes. Did you see the 2008 ABC Family Channel miniseries
Samurai Girl? In it Jamie Chung portrayed a Japanese teenage girl
from an traditional Japanese family who was mixed up with the yakuza.
And get this, her love interest was a young clean cut white male
who was also an expert in sword fighting and martial arts! Now I've
never read the book though some posters on the SG message board
were offended because in the book the character of Heaven Kogo
had a young Asian male love interest who was a sword handler and
martial arts instructor. Though the writers of the television
show changed his ethnicity to being white most likely to attract
a "wider demographic viewing audience." I know that this may
sound borderline racist and don't intend it to be though I'm
just repeating what other posters on the Samurai Girl board had
to say and most were not pleased with the change of ethnicity
of Heaven's boyfriend/lover. Now personally I did not care about
this small detail in the tv show and found it to be insignificant.
And I'm mestizo Filipino, my dad was pinoy and mom was Caucasian.
Now all of my life I have been constantly mistaken for Hispanic
or South American. And I always tell people that I'm of mixed
race and the great majority are so surprised to hear that I'm
not Latino/Hispanic and don't speak Spanish for the life of me.
I grew up in N. California in Campbell/San Jose of Santa Clara
Valley. And the majority of young Filipinos there do date within
their own race though have seen some young Filipinas who've
dated white dudes and of course I never had an issue with that.
And there are lots of Filipino males who also date young white
women and I'm okay with that since I happen to be one of them!
I cannot believe the previous poster who seems so ignorant
and kept on disagreeing with and insulting you. Oh well she's
just another imdb troll! Take care and I love Jamie Chung!
