Where else are we gonna gush and chat about future projects??
Where else are we gonna gush and chat about future projects??
Noooooooooooo!
Whyyyyyyyyyyy?
I hv been talking movies with filmlovers for a decade and now they're gonna take away the only place I can do this.
Oh, trolls, trolls, trolls!
Uff, I blame Trump: once IMDb saw what happens when trolls arent censured, they thought they'll cut the tree (and damned be all the birds nests and all).
😢
Well that wasn't exactly expected! What a disgrace! And what complete idiots they are to think that it was better to shut down such a really valuable resource just because they can't be bothered to control the trolls.
Their Facebook page and the like don't provide the same engagement facility at all, whatever they claim. I, for one, have no interest at all in the likes of Facebook or Tumblr and I have only ever known anything about what goes on there from what I've seen referred to here. I've never had any interest in reading the endless, pointless, comments sections on articles either. And that's not going to change.
IMDB deserve to see the site traffic collapse. I don't suppose it will, but I'd like it to. What they're doing is completely deplorable!
I hope the trolls are happy at least!
IMDB deserve to see the site traffic collapse. I don't suppose it will, but I'd like it to. What they're doing is completely deplorable!Completely agree. I'm guessing 80% or more people come to checks message boards to see if anyone else has already asked about that one thing that was bothering them about a movie, or trying to figure out who that actress looks like, or what is that movie that they cant remember the title to*.
Surely they have much to lose from getting rid of message boards. How can they do this after building themselves up as this hub of discussion for sooo many years? I mean, its not like they hv a sister company where people also discuss movies, stars, awards, etc, right? I would understand if they shut down only the thematic boards - Awards, Politics, Sci fi, etc but to shut down all seems like overkill.
(*Someone once helped me identify a movie from the description of a sunset scene. Moment to Moment, in case you're interested in a Hitchcockian 60s movie.)

80% of the people using IMDB don't use the message boards at all. And then you have those who spam them with every link imaginable or hawk their own products.

Sure, completely deplorable. Right up there with banning people from entering a country because of their religion or threatening people with a weapon.
The fast majority of people using IMDB do not go near the message boards at all.
As for "controlling the trolls," there are people on some boards who seem to believe that they own the board and can control discussion and that anyone who expresses a differing opinion is a troll. This particular board is one of the worst for that problem. Others will blindly follow a "board leader" or "leaders" who are nothing more than bullies and will join with them to harass people. Again, this particular board is one of the worst for that.
Other boards sit completely unused by anyone and just take up space on the server. It eventually collapsed of its own accord. That's what happened with AOL message boards and several others.
Wishing that a business lose traffic just because it is doing away with the place where you personally like to voice your opinion and shout down others you have labeled "troll" for no reason other than you've been ordered to do so because they disagreed with someone doesn't quite reach the tag of "deplorable" but it is quite childish.
I just saw that. :-(
Wow, that's a big change.
The full announcement is here, for anyone who hasn't seen it:
http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement
They mention using IMDb's social media to communicate with IMDb, but clearly that isn't an appropriate venue for discussing actors and movies. Who can recommend an alternative site that has good troll controls? Is Rotten Tomatoes good for that?

Oh c'mon. I don't know why you got so defensive, there ARE thousands of trolls on IMDb. Like, real nasty ones, posting illegal content. I visit like 6 IMDb boards on a regular basis and have reported illegal streams and torrents dozens if not hundreds of times. And this is still nothing compared to crazy ass stuff going on in Marvel/DCU movie boards, The Walking Dead/Game of Thrones types, and I assume politics/soapbox/whatever those are. There's actual hate speech going on, links to all kinds of illegal sites (not just streams for movies/TV), doxxing, catfishing, stalking, etc etc etc.
The reasons IMDb is giving are BS, they are closing the boards because they don't have resources to hire enough administrators or ways to control the content of people's posts at least somewhat. Which is fine, Amazon is a private corporation who are free to do what they please, but it's still quite disappointing. Just don't pretend there aren't trolls on the site because you don't like Cumberbatch fans, that's either delusional or disingenuous.
Do you even know what honor is?
- A horse.
Goodness, I only just noticed this! Incredibly sad - I've been using IMDB boards for over ten years and now this! Of course there are trolls and some boards have been totally taken over and destroyed by them. I visit boards for certain TV shows and the shipper wars, for example, that go on are truly both idiotic in themselves plus spoil the 'real' conversations for everyone else.
Having said that, I agree with Inglorious - it's about not wanting to pay for the staff to monitor the boards plus they don't bring in income. I think IMDBPro is the way they are going.
I have been thinking of the changing Internet communications landscape a lot recently. When I started - in the late 90's, believe it or not! - it was all message boards. I had a brilliant time on a Russell Crowe Board for years, made friends I'm still in constant touch with today. Ditto re 'Lord of the Rings' boards.
The difference is that these days, all Internet social media is about the SELF! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr - these are all NOT discussion forums but pages/blogs by individuals, talking of themselves, their lives, their interests, giving out their opinions. Even if you try to use a tumblr account as a discussion forum, the owner has to decide what to post, all with delays depending on how active they are, no proper back-and-forth can be managed.
The only place where,as far as I know, people can still set up proper message boards is http://www.yuku.com/. That requires monitors as well but this board has become a real community - I'm sure a few of you (us?) could agree to share the monitoring duties.
This is the one way this board could be re-created I think.
