I get that he is a Trump loyalist, but why wouldn't Trump pick a popular politician from a swing state or someone who is popular with people outside of his already existing base?

He was one of the first people to accuse Biden and his team for the assassination before they started looking for facts, something Trump would do. And there's the fact that he's quite far on the right. Trump wants someone who has the same level train of thought as him is my assumption.
