It's basically a biological instinct, men want to have sex with the most fertile women, and that = girls aged 18-23. And women like older men who are more secure, of higher social status and able to care for offspring. That's why older men + younger women is the norm.

A young guy wanting a woman well past her fertile peak is if anything going against nature. Surveys have shown men of most any age group all chose an average age of 23 as being the most desirable age in terms of a woman's attractiveness.

It's a power shift. A beautiful woman will carry almost all of the sexual power while she is young, she will have power over men and get what she wants. But once late middle age hits it shifts and men become more sexually powerful and desirable into their 30's, 40's, 50's etc.
