How is it that actors like this can be cast as leading men?

In past decades he never would have gotten past "leading man's friend" second banana roles. Star criteria in the 2000s is very odd.

One major qualification these days is that a leading "man" in American cinema has to give off the boyish metrosexual douchebag vibe. Gordon-Levitt seems to qualify. In his case, being Jewish surely confers a tribal advantage.

Oh, there's always a few roles available to an "everyman" type, not all actors have to be good-looking.

Neither do all movie stars, I mean Melissa McCarthy is a movie star.

When my wife and I first saw him on "Third Rock from the Sun" we both thought he was a girl.
