glad of his gay role comments

"It's so cool. I don't see what all the fuss is about playing gay characters. When I did Y Tu Mama Tambien, I was asked, 'Don't you worry about what people will say to you in the street?' It seemed like it was such a huge deal.

"Why would it be an issue for me? I think it is a very American thing. In Mexico, no one has given me any s**t for playing gay roles, for playing a transvestite, whatever. They don't confuse the actor with the role. I mean, they don't think Al Pacino's a cop!"

im so glad that a straight actor has FINALLY stood by his gay characters and not tried to distance himself from homosexuality by saying "it was the most awful thing i've ever had to do".
its refreshing that a mans comfortable enough with his own sexuality that he can stand by his characters and is not shamed to be linked with homosexuality.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

I agree. I don't understand how some people can't understand what the word ACTING means.

Exactly - gay actors never get applauded for playing straight roles. As an actor, surely you would be frequently called upon to do love scenes with people you're not attracted to. The sex of the person in question should be irrelevant - if you're in the job for the right reason, that is.

Some people can't even muster up screen chemistry with their real life lovers, so clearly it has nothing to do with personal feelings and everything to do with talent!

I'll just add this onto the long list of reasons why I love Gael Garcia Bernal...

never knew law had said those things, but he's always been very comfortable with his sexuality anyway so it wasn't a question.
im talking of those a-listers who release interviews before the film even hits cinema's saying "it was so embarrassing and awkward to kiss another man blah blah blah"

Total agreement. I realize he's passed away but here goes--Heath Ledger was CONSTANTLY apologizing for playing gay in "Brokeback Mountain". First of all he didn't want to kiss Jake (really--how much DO they kiss in the final film? Almost never). Then he insisted that he be the top in the "sex" scene. AND in every interview he gave about it he made it clear he had a girlfriend. Jake Gyllenhaal didn't act like that at all. Kind of sad. It seems British actors are the only ones who have no problem playing gay.

Gael hit it on the head. Gay role hysteria is an American thing, a reflection of this country's sexual hysteria generally and gay sexual hysteria specifically. People in most other countries, as he says, don't give a s hit.

Exactly. For instance Debbie Reynolds HATED Gene Kelly with a passion while filming "Singin in the Rain" (Kelly was a monster to work with) but on screen they both looked believably in love. I never though she was much of an actress until she started speaking out about "Singin..." a few years back.
