Miscast in a Knight's Tale?

I just saw this movie last night. Well, actually I only saw about an hour in the middle so I don't know how it starts or ends, so please correct me if you think I'm wrong.

As I was watching, I just kept thinking to myself this girl was miscast as Kate the ferrier. I thought she should have been cast as Lady Jocelyn. She's way better looking than the girl who was playing Jocelyn in my opinion, and she was a real joy to watch, so it just threw me off that Laura should be playing the blacksmith.

I think the producers really missed out by giving her such a small part when she should have been in the starring role.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

First of all, I think Shannyn Sossamon is absolutely gorgeous and was well suited for the role of Jocelyn, but I am a big fan of Laura Fraser, and I think she she totally rocked as Kate - Besides, how may actress's get to play a medieval blacksmith in a movie anyway? I'm sure she knows she had the better, and more interesting role.

I agree about her being better looking than Jocelyn, but she's excellent as Kate. She really made the minor role of Kate the Farrier significant, so much as that people'd call it a miscast.

She'd still rock as Jocelyn, just not as hard - that's my opinion.

Although she is significantly better than Jocelyn. I am glad they kept fraser as Kate, afterall she does have more screen time and she gave just the perfect amount of comic relief to the character.

She was screen much more than Jocelyn... I think. She definitely caught my eye more than the star, but I can better respect an actress willing to be a character.

i was thinking the same as you vasq they should have made laura as jocelyn and shannyn as kate . not that im saying shannyn wasnt beautiful because she was but i think laura was better......

reply

i don't think shannyn would have made as good blacksmith.
think it was perfect the way it was, altough, i might recast jocelyn anyhow, as someone better, not laura she was perfect as kate

Completely agree!

Laura should have been Jocelyn!
I have been thinking that for over 10 years now.

Shannyn Sossamon maybe could have played Kate but it wouldn't have mattered to me who played Kate as long as Laura played Jocelyn

Laura would have been far more believable and she looks more like a princess to me.

To me the problem isn't so much mis-casting the roles as it is with the script. Aside from the fact that Jocelyn is the "Princess" in the story there is absolutely no reason for William to choose her. Jocelyn is spoiled, conceited, abusive, manipulative and on and on -- no redeeming qualities. She's a better match for Adhemar -- they can go through life together making everyone around them miserable.

If the screenwriter had really wanted shake things up, there would be scene after the tourney where William confronts Jocelyn, tells her she's a shrew and walks off with Kate and his team (I always thought William and Kate were better suited to each other anyway). Sticking with the "hero gets the beautifulprincess" forumla didn't really work for me here.
