Dunno why people dislike him when he came in when outside forces were at play. Price for fuel/inflation was high due to OPEC control and Iran turning fundamentalist which overthrew the US backed Shah so that didn't help the US. Carter tried to wane off oil barons but American people wasn't having any of that alternate energy BS. I guess the other failure was the Iran hostage crisis which again, not his fault but weather factor and faulty helicopters along with whoever planned the op.

He was extremely unqualified and was only elected because he was perceived as the opposite of Nixon, and most people wanted a change of pace.

Why a failure, well at home in the US the economy was a disaster. People can argue forever how much was his fault but when you’re president while the economy is ravaged like that you own it.
And overseas he projected weakness and whenever the US is seen as ineffective and weak the bad actors around the world take advantage. Add in the disaster in the desert during the failed attempt at rescuing the hostages and he radiated incompetency.

The country quickly realized their mistake and switched course again. It was much more conservative back then….CA had Republican governors!——-heck people forget or ignore that Nixon had been re-elected by a laaaaaandslide, 49/50 states I think?
Carter was the only Democrat president from 1968-1992, and part of that was specifically due to just how bad he was.
Nice guy but he was in over his head.

He won due to Ford pardoning Nixon which peeved enough people to push him over the finishing line. That and inflation was still pretty bad when he got into office.

He was just too nice a guy I suppose. It did help Argentina depose its dictator though when he advocated on human rights.

True, things were stricter and Conservative back then. Hippy anti-consumerism then was replaced by disco and hedonism. HIs presidency may have failed but not his post-presidency which is way up there. The only president to get a nobel peace prize... Oh wait, Obama somehow got one as well didn't he.

His incompetence caused American soldiers to die. Two aircraft collided because the operation was so poorly run. One of the things you learn in Army basic is that the president is the commander in chief so he was ultimately responsible for Desert one.

I don't think that's a fair assessment because everything was new at the time with the OP. They were trying new tactics that were put to the test. It was the leaders planning the op that didn't foresee these types of scenarios. If anything, this was a good lesson into what made Tier 1 Ops of today in the US.

Delta Force was deployed first time as well as pilots who were untrained in low level low visibility flying when the sandstorm hit. This later on created the 160th SOAR "Night Stalkers" for this very reason. DEVGRU was also formed under this time as well under a unified SOCOM. I think this was the best it could happen instead of an actual Op engaging with actual enemies.

All the things other posters have written are true, but we had athletes in my family who were devastated by his boycott of the 1980 Olympics. After a lifetime of training and sacrifice to peak that year, that fortnight, many felt was a staggeringly poor move. Then, the USSR boycotted the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and many people who stood on the medal stand would not have had a shot during those games when the Eastern Bloc and the Soviets boycotted us.

Historically, the original Greek games was celebrated as a moment for all rival, fighting factions to lay down their swords and shields and 'play nice.'

He seems like he was a nice man who lacked global vision.

Domestically he wasn't successful with lowering inflation/gas prices & unemployment. He was regarded more on the world stage as a humanitarian.
