shareStar Trek Into Darkness made a lot of money. Mostly on the strength of how likable the first movie was. (even though I think blowing up Vulcan was about as anti-Gene Roddenberry as you can get. It was unnecessary. The writers showing off their sociopathic tendencies.)
But the fallout from STID (that is the mental, emotional audience response) is still actively mounting. This after more than 3 years of it's release!
The fallout has adversely affected the economic potential of Beyond. In other words people were burned by STID.
Hurt feelings go a long way. Time will tell.
You may be in favor of the short term bilk but when compared to the long-term damage it does I don't think such a model is economical feasible.
You don't burn an audience you will need down the road, even if you think making a quick buck will negate needing that audience later on.
You will eventually reap what you sow.
