Lily Rules! Dig that Huckabees chuckle

After watching the Huckabees videos, I now love Lily Tomlin (and Dustin Hoffman) even more. They are both so excellent.

My favorite part is the little chuckle that she does at about 1:54 in the office set video (right before the director flies back in through the prop door); it's so cute, but she doesn't even flinch when mere seconds later he gets up into her face again.

Just so you know, in my world Lily Tomlin can do no wrong.

Your last statement says it all.

Thanks! I appreciate your support!! (kidding, just as I sorta was above)

EDIT - No, as I think about it a bit more, I guess I wasn't kidding. She and Jane have provided the world with so much advanced, sophisticated humor throughout the years that she deserves way more slack on this than some are willing to give her.

And the reason it doesn't bother me that she cursed her co-workers is that it is pretty obvious that they are all well aware of where she is coming from and why she's going off on Russell, and they probably won't take her words personally (a case of been there, felt that.) Plus, she didn't turn on them until she heard the snickers from the back seat, so she thought that they were laughing at her, instead of just the situation, which is probably what they were more entertained by than merely her anger specifically.

So I think I was right - Lily can do no wrong!

reply

Yes, because her behavior on that set was so sophisticated.

No, you both are wrong. How she behaved, especially in the car with her co-workers, was truly disgusting, unprofessional behavior. I am embarrassed for her, and I think less of her for it. She was wrong for that, and you are wrong for thinking it is acceptable.

I don't care how talented someone is.
And I understand making movies can be stressful.
But nobody.
Nobody.
Is justified in acting that way.
Either Lily Tomlin or the director.
Absolutely scary and unprofessional.
Unrestrained and uncontrolled.
I would have
walked
off
the
set
and not come back.

Lily tomlin did what she had to do to someone who was being very unreasonable and just watching the way he lashed out at her was very vulgar and she kept her cool and handled it professionally, the car video is understandable because they were shooting 6 hours straight and the director keeps telling them to tone it down and then tone it up so she flipped. The director was very unprofessional and does not have the right to treat anybody that way not even a difficult actor on set.

Spoken as one who has never, ever lost their temper. How saintly you must be! I'm in awe of such divine judgement!!

I'm sad that you would impugn nearly 40 years of outstanding work due to one bad day she had on a troubled set four years ago. Plus I don't consider her outburst "acceptable" as much as understandable, relatable, and so very human.

I'm sad that you "think less" of such a wonderful actress merely because she exibited human behavior in such an uncomfortable and frustrating situation. You do realize that she was not even allowed to get out of the prop car to cool down and regain her composure, right?

I'm speaking as someone who has lost their temper a few times at work, and who has vented that frustration to those who caused it and to those who contributed to it, although never with swear words; there were no resultant ill consequences, either, because each time it became obvious that I was correct, and the offending situations were modified to correct the inconsistencies that I pointed out.

At certain times a show-stopping verbal objection is required to achieve the success of the entire project. And that is what Lily did. She was being the 'squeaky wheel', as they say.

Yes, I considered the Huckabees movie an artistic success, and I still do, mainly due to Jude Law's funny and enlightened performance. Although I can see that the director is apparently an abusive jerk, I still like his movies. Wrap your head around that, if you can. (It's called "open-mindedness" - look into it!)

BTW, if the filming of the Huckabees office scene occurred before the filming of the automobile scene, then anything Lily said in the prop car was perfectly fine, because after the director called her the C word, any & all restraint on her part is merely voluntary.

She would have been justified in having the director fired for his verbal sexual abuse. He crossed a line that she did not.

I've lost my temper, even at work. But, I've never cussed out my boss, or my co-workers like this tired old diva did, and never when I really wanted to and had absolute grounds to. And don't patronize me. I objectively watched the two clips of Lily freaking out (Russell was more psychotic in one of them, yes, which doesn't excuse her gross behavior) and there is NO excuse for such a crude, unprofessional outburst. We all "exhibit human behavior", but as a professional, be one an actor, a teacher, a doctor, etc., we all have professional standards and behavior to uphold. Dustin Hoffman was able to, and he's every bit the veteran, and even more acclaimed (as if that's justification for such behavior as Tomlin's) than she. Naomi Watts was able to. Mark Wahlberg was able to. She "wasn't allowed" to get out of the car? What was this? Nazi Germany? She could physically get out of the confines of the car for a breather. Certainly such an acclaimed, respected star could. Regardless, her behavior - a diva tantrum - was inexcusable. And, yes, I think less of her for it. Absolutely. I think the director is on another level - total psycho, which Tomlin is not. But, I was truly appalled by her behavior as well.

Russell verbally "sexually abused" her? That's an interesting take. He must have a thing for sexagenarian lesbians.

As for the movie itself - No wonder it sucked.

Russel showed he's a complete oaf. Unfortunately he made one of my favourite films so maybe he needs someone to stand between him and the cattle as Hitchcock called actors coz he sure doesnt know how to manage people.

The worst of it is that Tomlin showed she isn't very sharp or witty ...so much for a sassy comedian. Hoffman sitting in the car was a bit of a useless lump too. Gee doesnt take much to prick the bubble on these celebrated geniuses.
