You think he would have reprised his role as Joker if he had lived?

Yes, but not necessarily in a stand-alone movie like Phoenix. I definitely think Nolan would have had him return in some way for The Dark Knight Rises.

I believe that the Joker would have featured prominently during The Dark Knight Rises and Ledger's death caused a rewrite or two. I'm not sure if there's official word on this, but I think that might be why DKR clips along so well at points and then completely goes off the rails at others.

I'm sure Ledger would have been a part of the courtroom scene with Bane and Scarecrow.

I think he would've had a bigger role. Like Bane might've busted him out of Arkham to mess with Batman and wear him down before breaking him (as he did in the comics).

Of course. There's a lot of money to be made in those comic book movies.

Rumor was, that the 3rd Batman movie in that trilogy was supposed to revolve around the Joker's trial, with keeping the inclusion of 2-Face. I can't imagine, a type-cast actor for romantic comedies, who finally had a dramatic role breakthrough, would turn down a role reprisal.
